What is CSAR?
Real World Experience Meets Education
About Us
The Cleveland School of Audio Recording is a 24-week educational program guiding students through the basic fundamentals of audio engineering as well as advanced skills used to create the industry's best-sounding records. Working one-on-one or in a small (2–6 person) group with a qualified instructor, students spend 2 days a week in lectures and/or labs, where they dedicate 2–6 hours on each of those days to mastering certain concepts, theories, and hands-on techniques of production recording and mixing.
Outside of their required classroom and lab hours, students have access to the studios for open labs during which they can apply practical applications of each week's studies. Students are also encouraged to sit in on real recording and mixing sessions conducted by Lava Room Recording's staff. At the end of the program, students are required to schedule an artist or band of their own and record a song from start to finish (recording and mixing) as their final project. This allows the student and the instructor to accurately evaluate the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course. At the end of the 24-week program, students receive a certificate of completion for the course and are equipped with the proper knowledge to begin a career in the professional audio industry.

My experience with the CSAR program not only gave me the education to excel in audio recording it helped me grasp the fundamentals of the studio environment. With the endless hours of hands on experience required of the CSAR program I gained an understanding of microphone techniques and placement, mix-down, DAW capabilities, and the recording industry. The class to student ratios are small so there is no problem getting your specific questions answered. You literally get a one-on-one experience with real life engineers and these guys really offer themselves up to help you. Had it not been for the knowledge I gained as a CSAR student i wouldn't be where I am today. I would highly recommend the CSAR program to anyone interested in getting into the recording industry and can't thank the people there enough for the valuable experiences I gained.

When I signed up for CSAR, it was with the goal of becoming a Recording Engineer, and learning directly from people who were experts in that field. I got exactly what I was looking for, and have even continued to work at Lava Room after I finished the course! After CSAR, I can confidently say that I have not only the technical knowledge needed for running sessions, but also the personal knowledge of how to connect with clients, and make sure that our time in the studio is successful and productive. On the technical side, I learned about the abundance of microphones, gear, and software used to shape the sounds we hear, and also how to mix and edit for a variety of different music, podcasts, voiceovers, and other types of audio. CSAR gives you time to actually assist engineers in real sessions, with invaluable experience that you can only get at a real studio, working with real clients. I don't know where I'd be without the CSAR program, and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in entering the Recording Industry!

I would recommend the CSAR program to anyone serious about audio engineering but not as interested in the traditional education process. I didn’t want to go to school to learn a bunch of stuff I couldn’t use and then be stuck with student loans, I wanted to get right into the material that I could instantly put to use. I found the program challenging and definitely not easy but the instructors helped me understand and make sense out of the material. The studios and equipment were top notch I got to use everything. Thanks for the amazing experience. I look forward to an exciting career that I’m moving into on my own terms.
